Thank you, James, for sharing your experiences and the shaping of your values this way. I was mostly oblivious to the continuing racial struggles that existed in our country until I was about 10. A visit to the lunch counter at a dime store in Columbia, MO raised my awareness, as my mom and I observed 2 Black women being completely ignored as they waited to be served. I was shocked! I had no idea that those things still happened in America! May we never forget the sacrifices that Dr. King and those who surrounded him made as they led the struggle.

The sad thing is how prevalent this kind of racism today. The struggle continues. And it's made even more difficult when efforts to correct systemic racism are being peeled back by the GOP-controlled Federal and State governments. We live in one of the most repressed states in the country when the legislature is trying to take over the St. Louis police force like it currently controls the Kansas City Police Department and has since the Civil War. There can be no other explanation than a white supremacist agenda and the takeover of St. Louis police is just one of many repressive proposals on the docket over at the state capitol.
